USD/JPY is driven by the interest-rate gap between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, plus growth and inflation data from each economy. Rate hikes, hot CPI and strong jobs numbers usually strengthen a currency, while dovish surprises weaken it. Risk sentiment matters too — the yen and franc tend to gain in risk-off markets.
